Dionaea is a genus that has earned a kind of botanical celebrity status for doing something plants “shouldn’t” do – move with purpose. Best known for the Venus flytrap, Dionaea has evolved a rapid snap-trap that closes in a fraction of a second, turning an ordinary leaf into a living, spring-loaded hunting tool. It’s not aggression, though; it’s survival, a clever workaround for life in soils so poor in nutrients that catching insects becomes the plant’s shortcut to nitrogen and minerals.

Remarkably, Dionaea is a tiny genus in terms of diversity, with its fame resting on a single species, Dionaea muscipula, and the incredible range of cultivated forms selected from it. From deep red rosettes to saw-toothed margins and oversized “big mouth” traps, growers around the world have revealed just how much variation can be coaxed from one wild species – making Dionaea a playground for collectors and a gateway plant for anyone curious about carnivory.

In nature, Dionaea is endemic to a very specific corner of the world: the coastal plain wetlands of North and South Carolina in the United States. There it grows in sunny, acidic bogs and wet savannas, often in habitats shaped by seasonal water and periodic fire. That wild origin explains its love of bright light, pure water, and nutrient-poor substrates – and why, when treated like a true bog plant, it becomes one of the most rewarding carnivores to grow, whether in South Africa or anywhere else.

Dionaea muscipula ‘Clayton’s Red Sunset’

Dionaea muscipula ‘Clayton’s Red Sunset’ is a legendary Venus flytrap cultivar celebrated for its intense, sunset-red colouring and classic, well-proportioned traps. When grown in strong light, the plant can develop a rich crimson to deep red flush across the trap interiors and often into the petioles, creating a warm, glowing look that lives up to its name. It’s a top choice for collectors who want a dramatic red flytrap that still retains the iconic “textbook” Venus flytrap shape – bold, clean, and unmistakable.

The species Dionaea muscipula is endemic to a very small region of the southeastern United States, naturally restricted to North and South Carolina, where it grows in open, sunny bogs and wet savannas with acidic, nutrient-poor soils. ‘Clayton’s Red Sunset’ is a cultivated selection derived from this species and does not occur in the wild. Plants form a low rosette of modified leaves, each ending in a snap-trap lined with trigger hairs and fringed with cilia (the “teeth”). Colour intensity is strongly influenced by light levels and seasonal conditions; under bright sun the traps and sometimes the leaf bases deepen toward red, while lower light can produce greener growth with red concentrated mostly inside the traps.

In spring to early summer, mature plants may produce an upright flower stalk held above the traps. The flowers are typically white, sometimes with faint greenish veining, and are presented in a small cluster at the top of the stem. Flowering is most common in spring (with timing shifting depending on cultivation conditions and hemisphere), and many growers choose to remove the flower stalk to maximise trap size and colour, though flowering can be enjoyed as part of the plant’s natural cycle.

Important note for seed buyers: Named Venus flytrap cultivars such as ‘Clayton’s Red Sunset’ do not reliably come true from seed. Seed-grown plants will show natural genetic variation – some may develop excellent red colour, others may remain more green, and trap shapes may vary. If you want a plant guaranteed to match the cultivar, it must be obtained via vegetative propagation (division or tissue culture).
