Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.

Disa caulescens × uniflora (Disa brendae) – Red-Painted Disa

Disa caulescens × uniflora is a beautiful and highly desirable Cape Disa hybrid, combining the refined delicacy of Disa caulescens with the bold floral presence of the famous Disa uniflora. This striking cross has strong South African character, drawing its heritage from the cool, wet mountain-stream habitats of the Cape, where these remarkable terrestrial orchids are associated with clear water, rocky ledges, seepage zones and moist sandstone environments. It is an exciting choice for collectors who appreciate rare orchid seed, Cape flora, and elegant, moisture-loving terrestrial species.

In growth, this hybrid forms neat green foliage and slender upright flowering stems that carry an abundance of graceful orchid blooms. When grown as a group, it creates a lush, floriferous display, with many open flowers held above narrow, fresh green leaves. The overall effect is elegant and refined, yet wonderfully showy, making it a superb candidate for specialist orchid collections and dedicated hobby growers.

The flowers are soft pink to medium rose-pink, often with paler blush-white upper hoods and deeper pink lower segments. Each bloom has a rounded hooded upper sepal, broad petal-like lower parts, fine reddish striping within the throat and delicate elongated pink floral details that give the flowers a graceful, almost floating appearance. The colour blend is charming and romantic, with the best forms showing a luminous pink display against fresh green stems and foliage.

As a hybrid of Cape streamside disas, Disa caulescens × uniflora is best approached as a cool, moisture-loving summer-flowering orchid, with flowering expected around the warm-season window associated with its parentage. It is ideal for attentive South African and international growers who can provide bright light, excellent air movement, cool roots, clean water and a free-draining yet moisture-retentive medium. For specialist collectors, it offers the added excitement of seed-grown variation, with the possibility of subtle differences in flower size, shade, markings and form.
