Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.

Disa versicolor (Disa hemisphaerophora, Disa macowanii) – Browning Disa, Apple-blossum Disa, Apple-blossum Orchid, Variable Disa

Disa versicolor is a striking terrestrial orchid with a bold, architectural presence and a wonderfully variable colour palette, perfectly reflected in its name, which means “many-coloured” or “changing in colour.” This impressive species is native to southern Africa, occurring in South Africa and extending into parts of southern tropical Africa. Within South Africa it is recorded from the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, making it an exciting orchid for growers interested in grassland flora, highland species and unusual African geophytes.

This tuberous orchid produces stout, upright flowering spikes that are densely packed with many small, intricate blooms. The inflorescences have a strong vertical form, with pale green to yellow-green stems and closely arranged floral bracts, creating a sculptural display when several plants are grown together. Its robust spikes, tight floral arrangement and unusual textures make it especially appealing to collectors who enjoy orchids with dramatic structure rather than only delicate floral form.

The flowers are fascinating up close, combining warm yellow, ochre, orange-brown and greenish tones, often heavily speckled or mottled with red. One of the most distinctive features is the contrast created by dark brown to almost black pointed bracts and tips, which give the spikes a dramatic, almost burnished appearance. Individual blooms reveal small orchid faces with yellow-green interiors, red-brown markings and rounded central details, making every spike richly patterned and full of character.

In habitat, Disa versicolor grows as a terrestrial species in rocky montane grassland and related open highland environments. It flowers mainly in the summer months, from December to February, when its tall, speckled spikes rise above the surrounding grasses. For South African growers, it offers a chance to cultivate a remarkable indigenous orchid with strong grassland appeal; for international collectors and specialist hobbyists, it is a distinctive addition to collections focused on African orchids, geophytes and unusual seed-grown treasures.
