Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.
Disa woodii – Golden Cob Disa, Woods Disa
Disa woodii is a bright and cheerful African terrestrial orchid, instantly recognisable for its dense upright spikes packed with golden-yellow flowers. Native to South Africa and neighbouring southern African countries, including Eswatini, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, this species brings the character of damp grassland habitats into cultivation. It is a wonderful choice for collectors, orchid enthusiasts and adventurous growers looking for an unusual seed-grown species with strong wildflower appeal.
In growth, Disa woodii produces neat, upright flowering stems rising from green, lance-shaped leaves. The inflorescences are vertical, compact and beautifully structured, with many small blooms arranged along the spike. When grown as a group, the effect is lively and eye-catching, forming a cluster of golden floral columns above fresh green foliage.
The flowers are a vivid yellow to golden-yellow, often opening from buds flushed with reddish-pink to burgundy tones at the tips. The contrast between the bright yellow blooms, green stems and warm red-tinged buds gives the plant a distinctive and highly ornamental appearance. Each spike carries an abundance of small orchid flowers, creating a rich, sunshine-coloured display that is especially attractive in close-up.
In habitat, Disa woodii flowers from spring into early summer, typically from September to December, when damp grasslands are active with seasonal growth. For South African growers, it is a rewarding indigenous and regional orchid suited to specialist cultivation; for international collectors and hobbyists, it offers a rare opportunity to grow an African terrestrial orchid with brilliant colour, compact elegance and excellent collector value.
