Ficus is a pan-tropical genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes and hemiepiphytes in the family Moraceae. Ficus occupies a wide variety of ecological niches; most are evergreen, but some deciduous species are endemic to areas outside of the tropics and to higher elevations. Fig species are characterized by their unique inflorescence and distinctive pollination syndrome, which utilizes wasp species belonging to the Agaonidae family for pollination. The fruit of most species are edible though they are usually of only local economic importance or eaten as bushfood. However, they are extremely important food resources for wildlife. Figs are also of considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as objects of worship and for their many practical uses.

Ficus bubu (Ficus kyimbilensis, Ficus pachypleura) – Bubu Fig; Bubuvy, Bubu-Vy, Swazivy, Swazi-Vy

If you love figs for their wild charisma – those fruit-laden branches and the sense of an ancient tree condensed into a young plant – Ficus bubu is a superb species to grow from seed. It develops into a handsome small to medium-sized tree with a sturdy, sculptural trunk and a naturally rounded crown. Even when young, it has that classic fig “presence”: a clean, branching framework topped with a dense canopy that looks bold and lush without needing constant shaping.

Ficus bubu is native to tropical Africa, occurring in parts of East Africa and into the central/equatorial region, where it grows in warm climates with seasonal rainfall. It is often associated with woodland edges, rocky hillsides, and well-drained slopes – places where roots can find crevices and moisture drains quickly after rain. For South African growers, it’s best suited to frost-free subtropical and warm coastal gardens (or protected microclimates), while international growers in tropical and mild subtropical regions will find it an exciting landscape fig with strong ornamental and ecological value.

The foliage is bold and handsome: broad, thick, glossy leaves in deep green, often held in clustered rosettes at the ends of branchlets, giving the crown a layered, “umbelled” look. The fruiting display is especially attractive – numerous rounded figs carried in dense bunches along the branches, typically green while developing and ripening through to warmer-toned shades as they mature, creating heavy clusters that read almost like grapes from a distance. As with other figs, the true flowers are minute and enclosed within the fig structure, so the “flower colour” is effectively not showy (pale/cream internally), with the visible display coming from the swelling and ripening figs.

Flowering and fruiting timing varies with climate, but in warm regions Ficus bubu usually produces its enclosed flowers and sets fruit during the warmer months, often from spring into summer, with figs enlarging and maturing into late summer and autumn where conditions remain favourable. Seed-grown plants are rewarding for growers who enjoy variation – seedlings can differ subtly in vigour, leaf size and branching habit, allowing you to select your best performers over time. If you want a fig with broad, glossy leaves, a robust trunk, and dramatic clusters of fruit that look completely at home in a rocky, wild landscape, Ficus bubu is an outstanding species to raise and showcase.
