Ficus is a pan-tropical genus of about 850 species of woody trees, shrubs, vines, epiphytes and hemiepiphytes in the family Moraceae. Ficus occupies a wide variety of ecological niches; most are evergreen, but some deciduous species are endemic to areas outside of the tropics and to higher elevations. Fig species are characterized by their unique inflorescence and distinctive pollination syndrome, which utilizes wasp species belonging to the Agaonidae family for pollination. The fruit of most species are edible though they are usually of only local economic importance or eaten as bushfood. However, they are extremely important food resources for wildlife. Figs are also of considerable cultural importance throughout the tropics, both as objects of worship and for their many practical uses.

Ficus burkei – Burke’s fig, Lowveld fig; Wurgvy

If you’re drawn to figs for their mix of toughness and abundance, Ficus burkei is an exceptional African species to raise from seed. It develops into a compact to medium-sized tree with a sturdy, clean trunk and a naturally branching crown that quickly becomes full and shapely. Even at a young age it has a purposeful, “wild-woodland” look – built for sun, wind, and open spaces – making it a superb choice for landscape growers, collectors of African trees, and anyone wanting a fig that looks authentically at home in nature.

Ficus burkei is indigenous to southern Africa, occurring through warm, summer-rainfall regions and extending into neighbouring countries of the interior. In South Africa it is especially associated with the Lowveld and adjacent bushveld habitats, where it grows in open woodland and along rocky, well-drained slopes and ridges. International growers in frost-free subtropical to tropical climates will find it a rewarding species with strong drought tolerance once established, while South African growers can expect best performance in warm regions and protected gardens where hard frost is rare.

The foliage is handsome and leathery: glossy, deep green leaves with a clear central midrib, arranged to create a dense, layered canopy. The fruiting display is the real spectacle – numerous small, rounded figs carried in heavy clusters along the branchlets and older wood, so the tree can look “beaded” with fruit when in season. These figs are often softly textured or slightly velvety when young, typically green while developing and later warming in tone as they mature, creating a decorative contrast against the dark leaves and grey-brown bark. As with all figs, the true flowers are minute and hidden inside the fig (so flower colour is not showy; effectively pale/cream internally), with the visible interest coming from the swelling and ripening fruit.

Flowering and fruiting times vary with climate and rainfall, but in summer-rainfall regions Ficus burkei commonly produces its enclosed flowers and sets fruit in the warmer months, often from spring through summer, with figs maturing into late summer and autumn where conditions remain favourable. Seed is best started in warmth with bright light and an airy, well-drained medium kept evenly moist; strong light and good airflow help seedlings develop firm stems and healthy, glossy leaves. For growers seeking a resilient southern African fig with a naturally elegant form and impressive clustered fruiting, Ficus burkei is a deeply satisfying species to grow and share.
