Albizia is a genus of about 150 species of mostly fast-growing subtropical and tropical trees and shrubs in the Subfamily Mimosoideae of the legume family, Fabaceae. The genus is pantropical, occurring in Asia, Africa, Madagascar, Central, South, and southern North America and Australia, but mostly in the Old World tropics.
Albizia adianthifolia or Flat-crown Albizia as it is commonly known is a most adored ornamental species. It is unbelievable how many uses this tree has! Gum or resin: Albizia adianthifolia produces a sweet smelling gum. Medicine: The bark is poisonous but is used medicinally by the Zulu of South Africa who make a love charm emetic from it. They also prepare an infusion (hot or cold) from the bark and roots to treat skin diseases like scabies. A cold extract from the roots alone is applied to the inflamed eye. In Mozambique, the bark is a remedy for bronchitis. Other products: Albizia adianthifolia is a source of three flavonoids, namely okanin, melanoxetin and dihydroflavonol.
