The genus Habenaria belongs to the orchid family, Orchidaceae, and represents one of the great terrestrial orchid lineages of the world. These fascinating plants occur across an enormous geographical range, from tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Americas and the Pacific to temperate parts of eastern Asia and southern Siberia. The genus is also well represented in southern Africa, with native species occurring in South Africa in habitats ranging from open grassland and rocky hillsides to marshes, woodland and forest.

Most Habenaria are perennial terrestrial orchids that disappear completely underground during their dormant period. They survive unfavourable seasons by means of fleshy roots or underground tubers, before emerging again when temperature and moisture conditions are suitable. The new growth may consist of anything from a compact rosette of leaves lying close to the soil to a tall, leafy stem carrying an impressive terminal flower spike. This seasonal transformation, from an apparently empty patch of ground to an intricately flowering orchid, is part of their considerable appeal.

The flowers are where Habenaria becomes truly extraordinary. Green and white predominate throughout the genus, but yellow, cream, pink, orange and reddish flowers also occur. Many species possess a deeply divided or three-lobed lip together with a conspicuous nectar-bearing spur. The petals, sepals, lip, column and projecting reproductive structures can combine to create remarkably elaborate flowers, sometimes giving them a delicate, spider-like, fringed or almost otherworldly appearance.

Those unusual floral structures are not merely ornamental. In many Habenaria, long nectar spurs, floral scent and the precise arrangement of the reproductive organs form highly specialised relationships with their pollinators. Hawkmoths and other nocturnal moths pollinate numerous green- and white-flowered species, while some brightly coloured species are visited by butterflies. Research has even demonstrated that differences in spur length and floral architecture can determine exactly where the orchid’s pollinia are attached to the head, eyes, palps or other parts of a visiting insect.

Their ecological diversity is equally impressive. South African species alone can be encountered in well-drained Highveld grasslands, rocky bushveld, coastal and montane forests, riverine woodland and marshy grassland. This diversity means that Habenaria should never be treated as though every species requires identical cultivation. Understanding the habitat and seasonal growth cycle of the particular species is one of the keys to success.

For orchid enthusiasts, specialist collectors and adventurous seed growers, Habenaria offers an irresistible combination of rarity, botanical complexity and extraordinary floral form.

Habenaria notabilis

Habenaria notabilis is an extraordinary terrestrial orchid for collectors who appreciate truly unusual floral architecture. Native to New Guinea, including Papua New Guinea and Indonesian New Guinea, it inhabits humid lower montane forest where plants grow terrestrially in rich humus and leaf litter. Recorded collections come from elevations of roughly 1,300–1,900 metres, making this a fascinating species associated with the cool, moisture-rich conditions of tropical mountain forests. It is a tuberous geophyte that retreats underground during its dormant phase before producing fresh seasonal growth.

Mature plants can become surprisingly substantial for a terrestrial orchid, producing upright leafy stems with elongated, lance-shaped green leaves and impressive terminal racemes crowded with flowers. In a well-developed group, numerous strong green flower spikes rise together, creating a lush display of overlapping foliage and densely arranged blooms. The flowers are predominantly fresh green to yellow-green, while the petals and especially the lip become distinctly paler and more yellowish. Each flower possesses an intricate, almost tasselled appearance, with the lateral portions of the lip expanding into numerous narrow, thread-like divisions that hang beneath the flower like a delicate botanical fringe. Subtle cream, tan or brownish detail around the central reproductive structures adds further complexity to these remarkable blooms.

This highly distinctive lip structure is one of the features that separates Habenaria notabilis from closely related New Guinean species. Plants may reach around 1.3 metres in favourable natural conditions, with individual leaves approaching 30 cm in length and the densely many-flowered inflorescence extending to about 20 cm. Flowering material has been collected in October in New Guinea, placing flowering at least partly within the austral spring season in habitat. When several flowering stems develop together, their numerous green-and-yellow fringed blossoms create a wonderfully exotic display that should appeal particularly to specialist orchid growers, terrestrial orchid enthusiasts and collectors of rare tropical geophytes.

For South African growers, Habenaria notabilis offers the opportunity to cultivate an unusual tropical montane terrestrial orchid quite unlike the more familiar epiphytic species, while international collectors can add a fascinating New Guinean species with exceptional floral form to specialised orchid collections.
