There are about 267 species of Wahlenbergia worldwide, of which most are found in South Africa. Most of them are annuals or herbaceous perennials with bell-shaped flowers in shades of mauve, blue, white, or cream.

Wahlenbergia androsacea, synonymously known as Wahlenbergia arenaria, Wahlenbergia glandulosa, Wahlenbergia inhambanensis, Wahlenbergia nudicaulis, Wahlenbergia perennis or Wahlenbergia rosulata and commonly known as Hare-bell, is an erect annual herb, up to 55 cm, with a basal rosette of leaves; margin dentate to pinnately lobed. It is found in Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique but is also indigenous to South Africas Eastern Cape and Northern Cape Provinces.
