Ipomoea is the largest genus in the family Convolvulaceae, with over 500 species. Most of these are called morning glories, but this can also refer to related genera. The genus occurs throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The genus is made up of annuals, perennials, evergreen shrubs, and trees. Many of the annuals and perennials are trailing or twining climbers. Although mainly grown for their funnel-shaped or tubular flowers, some are grown for their foliage. Ipomoea can be grown in the greenhouse or outdoors as annuals over a pergola or archway, or as groundcover.
The Cardinal Climber Vine is sometimes confused with the ‘Cypress Vine’, but this is a totally different vine! These morning glories are annuals in colder climates and perennials in warmer climates. It will self-sow for even more vines the following year! Seeds are easy to collect for re-planting the following spring in colder climates. An absolutely beautiful twining vine with vivid crimson trumpet shaped flowers that hummingbirds and butterflies love. The very attractive foliage is a lustrous emerald green and it is shaped like palm or fern leaves. The Cardinal Climber Vine has been grown since the 1800’s. Bright cardinal red blooms from early summer until frosts are very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. Vigorous vines will climb 2-3 meters if given the room on trellises and arbors in full sun or part shade. Also suitable for pots.
