Buddleja is a wonderfully charismatic genus of flowering shrubs and small trees in the figwort family, Scrophulariaceae, celebrated for its long, nectar-rich flower clusters and its easy, airy garden presence. The genus contains more than 100 species and has a broad native range stretching across tropical and subtropical parts of the Americas, Africa, Madagascar and Asia. The name honours the English botanist and clergyman Rev. Adam Buddle, and the plants are especially admired for their fragrant blooms and their ability to draw in butterflies and other visiting insects.
Buddleja glomerata, commonly known as The Karoo Sagewood, sneezebush and niesbos, is an attractive foliage plant with silvery, scalloped leaves and heads of yellow flowers during spring and summer. This South African endemic plant forms a small tree up to 4 m in height and 3 m wide or grows into a bushy, upright and straggling shrub. Buddleja glomerata is fast growing with several stems that develop at the base of the plant and are covered in light brown, stringy bark. Young branches are flat, angled, light green in colour and are covered with whitish hairs whereas older branches are light brown. The young leaves are silvery green and fade to a bluish green when older.
