Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia coralligemma is a perennial plant endemic to Limpopo, South Africa, where it thrives in wetlands, forest edges, and grassy slopes, from Blouberg and Soutpansberg to the Wolkberg. From January to April, it produces tall spikes of vibrant orange flowers, which attract bees, sunbirds, and other nectar-feeding animals with their nectar. This plant prefers rich soil and grows best in a sunny spot or partial shade, requiring ample water during the growing season. It benefits from monthly fertilization during its active growth period and is wind-tolerant, making it a popular choice for coastal planting.
