Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.

Kniphofia ensifolia subsp. ensifolia, also known by its synonyms Kniphofia ensifolia var. albiflora or Kniphofia rivularis, is a widespread indigenous South African species found across the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, and North West provinces. This hardy, evergreen perennial features basal, strap-like leaves and produces spikes of tubular flowers that start red and open to a greenish-white colour. While it thrives in moist areas, it requires full sun for optimal growth. Known for attracting insects, sunbirds, and other birds, Kniphofia ensifolia subsp. ensifolia is one of just three Kniphofia species found in Gauteng.
