Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia evansii, commonly known as Cathedral Peak Poker or Evans’ Poker, is a rare, location-restricted endemic species from South Africa, native to the Cathedral Peak area of the Drakensberg in KwaZulu-Natal. This perennial plant, which grows from rhizomes, is found in montane grasslands, moist ledges, seepage lines, and stream banks at elevations between 1900 and 2300 meters. It has long, narrow, arching leaves and produces spikes of brightly coloured tubular flowers in red, orange, and yellow. These flowers release nectar, attracting bees and sunbirds. Preferring full sun, well-drained soil, and a wind-sheltered spot, the plant thrives in healthy, compost-rich soil with mulch and requires plenty of water during the growing season.
