Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia littoralis, commonly known as Beach Poker, is a near threatened South African endemic species found in the KwaZulu-Natal province from St Lucia to Port Shepstone. Though it is a widespread species in coastal KwaZulu-Natal, it is only known from 13 locations and is threatened by extensive and ongoing habitat loss due to agriculture, forestry and urban expansion. It grows on the Indian Ocean Coastal Belt in coastal grassland on moist depressions but not usually in permanently waterlogged soils, at altitudes of 5-200 m. During spring it produces gorgeous bicoloured red and yellow flowers.
