Alluaudia procera, commonly known as Octopus tree, Madagascar Ocotillo, Madagascan Ocotillo or African Ocotillo, is a deciduous succulent plant species of the family Didiereaceae, native to Madagascar. When planted outdoors this species can grow into a small succulent tree, up to 18m tall, with spiny, columnar upright stems that rarely branch giving it a ‘crown of thorns’ appearance. Indoors the plant can grow from 1,5m to 3m tall. During spring and summer, the leaves appear in an interesting pattern between each thorn which adds to the appeal of this unusual plant.
