Othonna is a genus of evergreen or deciduous geophytes, dwarf succulents or shrubs belonging to the sunflower family Asteraceae. The genus includes more than 100 species concentrated in the Western Cape of South Africa and southern Namibia. A few species occur in summer rainfall parts of southern Africa. The genus is closely allied to Senecio and can be distinguished principally by details of the involucre. Taxonomically they are in need of a modern revision.
Othonna arbuscula is a deciduous, perennial, succulent shrub found growing on rocky slopes with clay soil, in the Richtersveld, Namaqualand klipkoppe, Knersvlakte, and also southwards into the Western Cape and the Robertson Karoo areas of southern Africa. It grows well in pots and has a natural bonsai tree shape. Bright yellow flowers, pollinated by bees or beetles, are borne in winter and the plant loses it leaves during the hot, dry summer months. It is a drought tolerant plant perfect for the water wise garden or rockery. Medicinally, a resin produced by the stems is used to treat colds, flu, headaches, colic, and it is even used as ointment to treat cancer.
