Gyrocarpus is a small genus of flowering plants in the Hernandiaceae family with a wide pantropical distribution.
This plant will make a showy bonsai with maple-like leaves. The swollen caudex is actually a lower stem. It has interesting one-seeded winged fruits that spin as they fall through the air. It grows in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. It is a slender, deciduous tree with smooth grey bark, often bleaching to a bronze colour on the sunny side. The leaves are spirally arranged and crowded near the ends of the branches. The leaves are large, up to 15 × 12 cm, more or less deeply 3-lobed, dark green above, paler greyish below, finely velvety on both surfaces and markedly 3-veined from the base. It has yellowish-green flowers in compact heads. The fruit is a woody nut with 2 long thin wings, aiding wind dispersal.
