Taxodium is a genus of 3 species of extremely flood-tolerant evergreen to deciduous conifers in the cypress family, Cupressaceae.
Taxodium distichum var. distichum, commonly known as Bald Cypress or Swamp Cypress is a long-lived, pyramidal shaped deciduous conifer that grows on swamps of the South-eastern and Gulf Coastal Plains of the United States which also it grows very well in drier soils. It is a large tree, normally growing between 25 and 40 m tall, sometimes reaching heights of up to 44 m tall and with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 m, rarely to 5 m. The name Bald Cypress comes from the fact that the tree loses its leaves in winter which is unusual for species in the Cupressaceae family and in coniferous trees in general.
