The genus Tacca, which includes the Bat flowers and Arrowroot, consists of ten species of flowering plants in the order Dioscoreales, native to tropical regions of Africa, Australia, and south-eastern Asia. Several species are cultivated as ornamental plants for their bold foliage and large flowers.
Discover the rare beauty of Tacca plantaginea, an extraordinary plant known for its striking green foliage and unusual bat-like flowers. A true conversation piece, this exotic species thrives in warm, humid conditions, making it an excellent choice for South Africa’s subtropical and coastal regions. With its lush leaves and fascinating blooms, Tacca plantaginea, also known as the Green Bat Flower, adds a touch of the tropics to shaded gardens, indoor spaces, or greenhouse collections. Tacca plantaginea looks like an ordinary plant, right up until it starts to bloom. When it does, the plant unfolds some of the weirdest and most amazing flowers in the plant kingdom. Beneath the clusters of purplish flowers hang long bracts that can reach 30cm in length, like cat’s whiskers. Above the flowers flare two light green coloured bract like bat wings.
Cultivating these unique flowers requires patience, but the reward is a spectacular plant that captivates with its otherworldly charm. Ideal for collectors and plant enthusiasts, Tacca plantaginea flourishes in well-draining, humus-rich soil with regular moisture and filtered light. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a botanical adventurer, these seeds offer the opportunity to cultivate a truly rare and breathtaking plant in your own home.
