Tabernaemontana elegans or Toad Tree as it is commonly known is a shrub or small tree with pale brown corky deeply fissured bark. All parts of this plant exude milky latex when damaged. The elliptic leaves are leathery and normally hairless. The sweetly scented flowers are creamy or pale yellow and are followed by fruits covered in pale brown warts. In Southern Africa the Shona use the root as an aphrodisiac.
