Sisyrinchium is a large genus of annual to perennial flowering plant in the Iridaceae family collectively known as Blue-eyed Grasses although they are not true grasses. Several species in the eastern United States are threatened or endangered.
Sisyrinchium bellum, commonly known as the Western Blue-eyed Grass or Californian Blue-eyed Grass, is native to North America from California and Oregon in and west of the Sierra Nevada Mountains extending south into Baja California in Mexico. It occurs natural mostly in grassy areas but can also be found growing in woodlands and at altitudes as high as 2400m making it somewhat cold hardy. It is a small, clump forming perennial with a rhizomatous stem and grass like leaves growing up to 20cm tall. It can be used in the garden as a filler plant for the foreground of borders and make an attractive addition to rockeries. Like other species of blue-eyed grasses that are locally dominant, it is generally known simply as “blue-eyed grass” within its natural range. The plant puts on a show of flowers in spring that are 1 to 2 cm in diameter and come in a range of shades from blue to purple and occasionally white. After flowering the plant goes dormant during the hot and dry summer months. An infusion of the roots and leaves has been used as a cure for indigestion and stomach pain by native American peoples.
