Capparis is a flowering plant genus in the family Capparaceae. These plants are shrubs or lianas and are collectively known as caper shrubs or caperbushes. Caperbushes are mainly used by humans for their edible fruit, which are rich in micronutrients.
In nature Capparis sepiaria or Wild caper-bush, as it is commonly known, grows to 6m in height yet in cultivation it grows into a shrub about 2m high. It has shiny oblong leaves with basal hooked thorns and during the summer months is has the most beautiful clusters of white-cream to mauve flowers. These are followed by fleshy purplish fruit. The wild caper-bushs fruit and seeds are relished by many birds and other animals which makes it a must have for any serious gardener.
