Crataegus laevigata commonly known as Woodland Hawthorn, Midland Hawthorn and Mayflower is a native of Europe and in open soil forms a small tree that grows to about 6 meters in height. This popular bonsai species most outstanding feature is its flowers, which can be white, pink or red. It is well suited to the following bonsai styles: Formal upright, Informal Upright, Slanting, Cascade, Semi-cascade, Broom, Rock-over-root, Clasped-to-rock, Twin-trunk, Clump, Group planting, Saikei. It is best kept outside where it can experience the changing seasons. During the hottest part of summer this wind resistant species should be kept in partial shade but can receive full sun for the rest of the year. It should be kept moist at all times, especially during summer.
