Wurmbea is a genus is the Colchicaceae family from sub-saharan Africa and Australia. The rootstock is a corm and flowers are star or trumpet-shaped.
Wurmbea marginata, synonymously known as Melanthium marginatum, Wurmbea campanulata var. purpurea, Wurmbea capensis var. purpurea, Wurmbea purpurea, Wurmbea spicata forma marginata or Wurmbea spicata forma purpurea and commonly known as Swartkoppie is a South African endemic species found in the Western Cape province. This winter growing plant reaches 6-22cm tall with lanceolate leaves. During spring it produces unusual scented red/purple flowers with dark margins.
