The genus Abutilon is a captivating group of flowering plants within the Malvaceae family, often referred to as “flowering maples” due to their vibrant, maple-like leaves. Comprising over 200 species, Abutilon is known for its striking, bell-shaped flowers in shades of yellow, orange, red, and pink, which make it a favourite in ornamental gardens around the world. Native to tropical and subtropical regions, Abutilon thrives in a variety of habitats, from woodlands to deserts, and is admired for its resilience and adaptability. These plants, whether grown as shrubs or small trees, not only brighten up landscapes but are also valued for their medicinal properties and use in traditional remedies. With its beautiful blooms and easy-care nature, Abutilon is a versatile genus that adds both colour and character to any garden.
Anisodontea elegans, synonymously known as Malva abutiloides, Malva anomala, Malva elegans, Malva macrocalyx, Malva rugosa, Malva venosa, Sphaeralcea elegans or Sphaeroma elegans and commonly known as Elegant Anisodontea or African Mallow, is a charming and versatile flowering shrub endemic to the Western Cape province in South Africa.
The stunning pink to magenta flowers, resembling hibiscus blooms, measure 3–5 cm in diameter and are produced in abundance from spring to autumn. These vibrant flowers attract pollinators like butterflies, adding life to the garden. The foliage consists of medium green, palmate leaves with slightly serrated edges, offering an attractive backdrop to the blossoms. This plant thrives in warm, temperate climates and can tolerate light frost, though it prefers mild winters. It grows best in well-drained, sandy to loamy soils, and while it can tolerate poorer soils, it performs best in fertile, well-drained conditions. The plant requires full sun to partial shade, with the best flowering results achieved in full sun.
