Antimima is a captivating southern African “mesemb” genus in the succulent ice-plant family (Aizoaceae), best known for its compact, often cushiony growth and jewel-like seasonal blooms that make even the harshest landscapes look gardened. Many species form tight, tufted clumps or small mounds with paired succulent leaves that can be finger-like or boat-shaped, sometimes varying on the same plant (a quirky “heterophyllous” trait). When in flower, these plants punch far above their size with daisy-like blooms in shades from white through pink to purple, often with darker staminode tips that add extra drama up close.

Antimima lawsonii (Mesembryanthemum lawsonii, Ruschia lawsonii) – Kimberly Matfig

If you love the “jewel-mat” look of true South African mesembs, Antimima lawsonii is pure collector’s magic: a tight, living mosaic of chunky, paired leaves that knit together into a low, sculptural cushion. Even when not in bloom it reads like miniature stonework – neat, geometric, and irresistibly tactile – perfect for showcasing in shallow bowls, small pots, or a dedicated mesemb pan.

This is a rare South African endemic with a naturally restricted range in the Northern Cape, recorded from the interior districts and associated localities of the region. Field information also places it on limestone and calcrete-derived soils of the Ghaap Plateau/Kuruman area, where it can be locally scarce and known from only a few sites – exactly the kind of plant that deserves to be grown from seed to take pressure off wild populations.

In cultivation, expect a compact, branching, mat-forming succulent with short woody sections and many tightly packed leaf-pairs that create that signature tessellated surface. The flowers, when present, are vivid magenta to purple-pink, daisy-like with a bright, shimmering centre – an electric contrast against the muted greens and sandy tones of the plant body. Flowering in habitat is typically tied to seasonal moisture and can vary with local rainfall, most often presenting from spring into the warmer months in its home range.

For growers in South Africa and abroad, give it what it loves: maximum light, excellent airflow, and a very mineral, fast-draining mix, with water applied carefully and only when conditions are warm/bright enough for growth. Start from seed and you’ll be rewarded with naturally variable, characterful plants that settle into a long-lived, slow-growing display specimen.
