The genus Arctotheca is a fascinating group of plants that belong to the Asteraceae family, known for their striking flowers and adaptability in diverse environments. These perennial herbs are native to Southern Africa but have found their way into various parts of the world due to their ornamental appeal and resilience. Arctotheca species, commonly known as “cape daisies” or “yellow daisies,” boast vibrant blooms with daisy-like flowers in hues of yellow, orange, and white, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Beyond their beauty, they are also incredibly hardy, capable of thriving in poor soils and harsh climates, making them popular in drought-resistant landscaping. With their rich history of cultural significance and ecological value, Arctotheca continues to intrigue botanists and gardeners alike, offering a blend of beauty, resilience, and adaptability in the plant kingdom.
Arctotheca populifolia, synonymously known as Arctotheca nivea, Arctotis populifolia or Arctotis verbascifolia and commonly known as Cape Beach Daisy, Beach Pumpkin or Sea Pumpkin in English and Seepampoen in Afrikaans, is a South African indigenous species found in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces growing exclusively on coastal dunes and coastal areas. Throughout the year it produces eye-catching bright yellow blooms.
