Canavalia is a genus of plants in the legume family, Fabaceae, that comprises approximately 48 to 50 species of tropical vines. Members of the genus are commonly known as jack-beans. The genus name is derived from the Malabar word for the species, kavavali, which means “forest climber”.

Canavalia rosea is a robust vine/climber normally found on coastal dunes. It has almost round leaflets. For most of the year is has an erect inflorescences of sweetly scented pink to purple flowers with a whitish patch at the base. Canavalia rosea was traditionally used both as a potentiator for other herbs, as well as marijuana substitute, similar to the way Wild Dagga has been reportedly used in Africa.
