Berzelia is a genus consisting of 12 species of upright, wiry stemmed, evergreen shrubs with a dense covering of small, fine, needle-like leaves. The flowers which appear in spring and summer, are minute but are packed in spherical clusters, of which there are several per head of bloom. The flowers are white to cream and, because the stamens extend beyond the tiny petals, the flower heads appear to be studded with protrusions. In cultivation, they are best grown in light well-drained growing medium with adequate moisture, positioning in full sun. Light trimming will retain the compact form after flowering. Most species are easily propagated from seed or small half-hardened tip cuttings.

Berzelia incurva

Synonyms: sometimes cited in older references as Brunia incurva; accepted name Berzelia incurva. Native to the Cape Provinces, with type locality notes around Caledon in the Western Cape.

This species builds dense, upright wands of minute, overlapping leaves, each stem finishing in a rounded “drumstick” of many, very small florets. Heads open ivory to creamy white and read as soft, velvet buttons; as they mature they take on subtle biscuit and russet tints that hold beautifully on the plant. The overall effect is sculptural yet airy—ideal for modern fynbos borders and textural, water-wise design.

Flowering concentrates from spring into early summer under Cape conditions, matching the genus pattern in the wild and in cultivation. Harvested stems last exceptionally well and add structure in mixed bouquets, posies and dried work, while in the landscape the species brings fine texture and year-round form alongside ericas and buchus.
