Dasylirion is a genus of 17 species of grassy looking rosette plants in the family Ruscaceae, all native to northern Mexico, with three species also extending into the south-western United States. They are not grasses but are related to the Agaves. As they grow older, the bases of several species develop into a beautiful trunk. When the plants are mature they send out blooms with hundreds of greenish-white bell-shaped flowers on a tall narrow spike coming from the center of the plant. Unlike most Agaves they do not die after blooming. Most Dasylirion species are reasonably resistant to cold and drought.
Make a big, bold statement in your low water garden with the metallic blue leaves on this grass-like succulent native to Mexico. Growing over 120cm high and wide, it forms a handsome mound of cascading serrated foliage. Very showy! In summer, 4.5 meter tall flower spikes emerge topped with creamy white flowers that attract bees galore! Provide excellent drainage for a healthy plant or try it in a large pot if your soil is less than ideal. Extremely tolerant of abject neglect but grows faster and looks better with the occasional sip of water and a bit of compost.
