Carpanthea pomeridiana is a beautifully striking mesemb and the only species in the Carpanthea genus which is in the family Aizoaceae. It occurs in the extreme south-western parts of the Western Cape Province of South Africa where it is found growing on sandy soils in the strandveld and coastal fynbos vegetation in full sun or in the light shade of other plants. This indigenous succulent prefers mainly winter rainfall and should be kept on the dry side during summer. It has also been recorded in south-eastern Australia where it occurs as an exotic. They are easily propagated from seed sown in autumn. Unlike other mesembs, Carpanthea pomeridiana grows very well in light shade and rapidly covers an area. It flowers profusely from late autumn to early summer when the large, fully double brilliant silky lemon and canary-yellow flowers are produced. The flowers close up tightly into a twisted tip at night. The leaves and flowers of Carpanthea pomeridiana are edible and can be cooked up as a stew with meat. Carpanthea pomeridiana, growing to only 15cm in height, is wonderful for the rockery, containers and bedding, adoring a sunny, dry situation.
