Cephalophyllum is a captivating genus of low-growing, mat-forming to trailing succulent plants in the Aizoaceae, the ice plant or vygie family. These hardy little jewels are strongly associated with the winter-rainfall regions of western South Africa and extend northwards into south-western Namibia, with many species adapted to open, stony, sandy, or renosterveld and fynbos habitats where rainfall is seasonal and drainage is sharp. The name Cephalophyllum comes from Greek words meaning “head” and “leaf”, referring to the compact, head-like clusters of succulent leaves produced by many species. In cultivation, the genus is loved for its neat creeping habit, drought tolerance, and brilliant daisy-like flowers, which may be yellow, red, orange, pink, purple or bicoloured depending on the species, often opening in the brighter part of the day to attract pollinators.

Cephalophyllum diversiphyllum (Cephalophyllum baylissii, Cephalophyllum bredasdorpense, Cephalophyllum caledonicum, Cephalophyllum cauliculatum, Cephalophyllum diversifolium, Cephalophyllum vandermerwei) – Variable Starfig

Cephalophyllum diversiphyllum is a distinctive South African vygie for collectors who love compact, highly textural succulents with brilliant floral impact. This fascinating member of the Aizoaceae family is endemic to the Western Cape, occurring from the Bredasdorp area eastwards toward Mossel Bay, where it grows in coastal renosterveld and fynbos habitats. Its natural home in open, sunlit, well-drained landscapes makes it especially appealing to growers who appreciate tough, water-wise plants with true Cape character.

This species forms a low, spreading to rambling succulent mat, with fleshy green leaves crowded in neat tufts along the main stems and at the tips of branching shoots. The plant has a wonderfully fresh, lively appearance, with rounded to slightly angled finger-like leaves, pinkish-red stems and colourful nodes that give the whole plant a rich, ornamental quality even when not in flower. In a shallow container or gritty succulent bowl, it develops into a dense, attractive mound that looks superb against mineral gravel, pebbles or decorative stone top-dressing.

In bloom, Cephalophyllum diversiphyllum is absolutely eye-catching, producing vivid magenta-pink, daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centres held above the succulent foliage. The contrast between the glowing pink flowers, fresh green leaves and reddish stems is striking, making this species a beautiful choice for specialist mesemb collections, rock garden displays and container growing. Flowering in habitat is most closely associated with the cooler growing season into spring, when seasonal moisture and bright light encourage the plants into growth and bloom.

For South African growers, this is a rewarding choice for sunny rockeries, dry garden pockets, raised beds and containers where drainage is sharp and summer watering is controlled. International growers can enjoy it as a rare Cape succulent for cool greenhouses, bright windowsills, alpine houses and specialist seed-grown collections. Sow in autumn or under cool, bright conditions, using a fine, free-draining mineral mix, and keep the seed tray lightly moist but never waterlogged until seedlings are established.
