This member of the Cucurbitaceae family was given this name by Adrianus Dirk Jacob Meeuse in 1962. It is found in the forests and bushes of Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, growing in a well drained but slightly rich soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to 25 centimetres, the vines up to two metres. The small flowers are greenish yellow. It is synonymously known as Rhynchocarpa bainesii, Kedrostis bainesii, Corallocarpus sphaerocarpus, Corallocarpus dinteri or Corallocarpus poissonii.
