Crassula is one of the most fascinating succulent genera in cultivation, loved for the sheer range of forms it offers. Within the genus you find everything from tiny moss-like annuals and dwarf crevice dwellers to neat rosettes, stacked columnar plants, trailing growers and even shrub-sized species such as the well-known jade plant. Southern Africa is the heartland of the genus, with around 149 species recorded there, although Crassula as a genus is far wider-ranging and native on a cosmopolitan scale.

What makes Crassula especially compelling for growers is that it combines beauty with resilience. Many species are adapted to drought through succulent leaves and stems, and the genus is closely associated with CAM photosynthesis, a water-saving strategy in which the stomata open mainly at night rather than in the heat of the day. That is one reason why so many species thrive in water-wise gardens, containers, rockeries and specialist succulent collections.

For collectors, the genus offers endless variety in texture, colour and habit. Some species blush red in stronger light, some stay silver-blue or soft green, some form cushions, some stack into pagoda-like towers, and others disappear into the landscape as miniatures. For gardeners, Crassula is equally valuable because many species are adaptable, compact and rewarding from seed, making them ideal for both South African growers and international hobbyists looking to build a diverse succulent collection.

Crassula susannae

Crassula susannae is a true collector’s jewel from Namaqualand, prized for its compact beauty, slow-growing habit, and unmistakable sculptural form. This rare South African endemic comes from the Northern Cape, where it is known from the Namaqualand region west of Soebatsfontein, with broader range references placing it around the Hondeklipbaai area. For South African growers it offers the appeal of a highly localised indigenous succulent, while for international collectors it brings the thrill of raising a genuine habitat treasure from seed.

What makes this species so captivating is its dense, cushion-forming habit of many tightly packed little rosettes. Crassula susannae is a dwarf, usually much-branched succulent that slowly builds a small mound over time, with each rosette formed from neatly arranged, more or less four-ranked leaves. The leaves are flat, thick, and smooth, green to grey-green or sometimes slightly brownish, with the exposed upper surfaces covered in tiny papillae that give the plant a frosted, velvety look. This creates the wonderfully ordered, rose-like clusters and close-packed dome of foliage that make the species such a standout in a shallow collector’s pot.

When in flower, Crassula susannae adds an elegant finishing touch without losing its compact charm. The flowers are small, white, and tubular to shortly cup-shaped, carried above or among the rosettes, with dark anthers adding a subtle point of contrast. Flowering is recorded mainly in autumn, especially from April to May, and the soft white blooms pair beautifully with the crisp green rosettes and pale, textured leaf surfaces.

For collectors, gardeners, hobbyists, and specialist growers, this is a superb seed-grown Crassula with rarity, texture, and strong visual appeal. It is perfect for miniature succulent displays, shallow bowls, and prized small pots where its slow, clustering habit can really be appreciated over time.
