Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.

Disa baurii (Herschelia bachmanniana, Herschelia baurii, Herschelia haematopetala, Herschelianthe bachmanniana) – Grassveld Blue Disa, Tropical Blue Disa; Bloumoederkappie

Disa baurii is a truly enchanting African terrestrial orchid, loved for its rare blue to violet-blue flowers and delicate fringed floral detail. Often known as the Blue Disa or Bloumoederkappie, this species has an airy, elegant charm that makes it especially appealing to orchid collectors, indigenous plant enthusiasts, specialist seed growers and hobbyists who appreciate unusual wildflower beauty. Its colouring is particularly desirable, as true blue tones are uncommon among terrestrial orchids.

The plants produce slender upright stems carrying several graceful blooms, with fresh green, grass-like foliage forming a fine base beneath the flowering spikes. The flowers open in shades of soft lavender-blue, violet-blue and purple, often with paler inner areas and darker purple accents. Their most striking feature is the beautifully fringed, tassel-like lip, which gives each bloom a feathery, highly detailed appearance and creates a refined, almost jewel-like effect when viewed up close.

In habitat, Disa baurii occurs across parts of tropical and southern Africa, extending into South Africa where it is recorded from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. It is associated with montane grassland and elevated open habitats, often growing where seasonal moisture, cool air movement and well-drained conditions support its natural growth rhythm. This broad African mountain distribution gives the species strong appeal for growers interested in highland orchids and unusual seasonal geophytes.

Flowering is mainly in spring in parts of its natural range, especially from late winter into spring, when the elegant blue-violet flowers rise above the grassy foliage on fine stems. When grown in a group, the effect is charming and graceful, with multiple slender spikes carrying open blooms and developing buds, each flower showing its hooded orchid form and distinctive purple-fringed lip. It is a species with subtle sophistication rather than heavy floral mass, ideal for collectors who appreciate fine botanical detail.

As with most Disa species, this is a specialist seed offering best suited to patient growers, orchid hobbyists and experienced collectors. The seed is extremely fine and should be treated as orchid seed, requiring clean sowing conditions, careful moisture control, good air movement and an understanding of seasonal terrestrial orchid growth. For South African growers, Disa baurii offers a beautiful connection to native montane grassland flora; for international collectors, it provides the opportunity to grow a rarely offered blue-flowered African orchid from seed.
