Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.

Disa bivalvata (Disa melaleuca, Ophrys bivalvata, Orthopenthea bivalvata, Penthea melaleuca, Serapias melaleuca) – Blacktrim Disa

Disa bivalvata is a striking and highly attractive South African terrestrial orchid, admired for its clean white flowers dramatically accented with deep maroon to purple-brown markings. Known for forming impressive colonies in suitable fynbos habitats, this species has a refined but eye-catching presence, making it a wonderful choice for collectors of Cape orchids, indigenous geophytes, rare seed-grown plants and unusual botanical treasures.

The plants grow from seasonal underground tubers and produce slender green stems with narrow, grass-like to lance-shaped leaves. The flower heads are elegant and compact, carrying numerous blooms and buds above fresh green stems. Each flower opens with crisp white, star-like segments, pale lime-green central structures, visible yellow anther detail and bold dark maroon markings around the inner floral parts and bud tips. When grown as a group, the display becomes especially beautiful, with many white blooms held together in a lively, natural-looking cluster.

In habitat, Disa bivalvata is endemic to South Africa and occurs in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape, from the Cape Peninsula eastwards to Humansdorp. It is associated with fynbos landscapes, especially sandstone slopes, mountain seeps and seasonally moist sandy or rocky places. Like many Cape orchids, it is closely linked to the natural fire cycle, often flowering most abundantly in recently burnt veld where competition has been cleared and seasonal growth conditions are ideal.

Flowering takes place from spring into midsummer, typically from September to January in habitat, with the best displays often appearing after fire. The flower colour is beautifully balanced: creamy white to pure white petals and sepals, deep maroon to purple-brown tips and inner markings, soft green centres and bright yellow details. This contrast gives Disa bivalvata a distinctive, polished look that stands out strongly in a close-up collection or specialist orchid display.
