Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.

Disa newdigateae (Herschelia newdigateae, Herschelianthe newdigateae)

Disa newdigateae is an exceptionally rare and captivating South African terrestrial orchid, treasured for its unusual flower form, rich colouring and remarkable Garden Route origin. Native to the southern Cape, particularly the Western Cape Garden Route and Knysna region, this species is associated with stony coastal slopes, short fynbos and sandstone-influenced habitats where it grows as a seasonal tuberous geophyte.

This distinctive orchid produces slender upright stems carrying a refined display of small, dramatic flowers and rounded buds. The blooms combine deep maroon, burgundy and wine-red upper hoods with cream, pale yellow and tan lower floral parts, creating a striking two-tone effect. The flowers are intricate rather than showy in the ordinary sense, with sculptural, orchid-like detail that rewards close observation.

In a group planting, Disa newdigateae forms an elegant cluster of fine greenish stems, maroon buds and open flowers held at varying angles. The rich burgundy hoods, pale ruffled margins and dark central markings give each bloom a jewel-like quality, while the unopened buds add warm bronze, tan and reddish tones. This is a collector’s orchid with quiet drama, ideal for growers who appreciate rare South African species with botanical depth and unusual character.

Flowering in habitat is recorded in late summer to early autumn, especially around March. The colour palette is one of its great attractions: deep maroon to burgundy flowers, cream-yellow lower margins, tan-brown buds and subtle wine-red markings. For South African growers, it represents one of the Garden Route’s most fascinating indigenous orchids; for international collectors and specialist hobbyists, it offers a rare opportunity to grow a seldom-seen Cape Disa with exceptional collector appeal.
