Disa is one of the great showpiece genera of the orchid family, Orchidaceae – a distinctly African group of mostly terrestrial, tuberous orchids celebrated for their sculptural flowers, vivid colour, and often very specialised habitats. Kew’s Plants of the World Online currently treats Disa as a genus in Orchidaceae with 186 accepted species, while South Africa is a major centre of diversity for the group. From the legendary red Disa uniflora, the “Pride of Table Mountain”, to delicate white, pink, mauve, orange, yellow, and red species from streamsides, seepages, grasslands, fynbos slopes, mountain ledges, and high-altitude wetlands, Disa offers growers and collectors some of the most elegant and sought-after terrestrial orchids in the world. Many species are cool-growing plants adapted to clean water, excellent air movement, bright filtered light, and sharply drained yet constantly moist root conditions; others are seasonal geophytes that demand a more precise wet-and-dry rhythm. This is a genus for patient growers, but it rewards that care with pollinator attracting flowers of exceptional refinement, ecological intrigue, and unmistakable South African character.
Disa welwitschii ssp. occultans (Disa tanganyikensis)
Disa welwitschii ssp. occultans is a beautiful African terrestrial orchid with a bold, upright habit and a soft yet vivid floral display. Native across parts of tropical and south-central Africa, including Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, the DRC and westwards into parts of Central and West Africa, it is a species of wet grasslands and dambos, where seasonal moisture and open grassy habitats support its striking flowering spikes. For collectors of African orchids, wetland geophytes and unusual seed-grown treasures, this subspecies offers something elegant, distinctive and rarely encountered in cultivation.
The plants produce tall, upright, spike-like inflorescences rising from fresh green, lance-shaped leaves. The flowering stems are strongly vertical, with green to reddish-green bracts arranged neatly along the spike, giving the plant a clean architectural presence. When grown as a group, the effect is superb: multiple flowering spikes standing together, each carrying many closely arranged buds and open blooms, creating a lush display of pink orchid flowers above the foliage.
The flowers are charming and abundant, usually medium to bright pink, with small orchid faces nestled among the bracts. Each bloom opens from a tight pink bud into a delicate flower with soft rosy petals, pale central details and slender floral parts that add movement and refinement to the spike. The green, bronze and reddish tones of the stems and bracts contrast beautifully with the clear pink flowers, making the plant especially attractive in close-up and as a collector’s display species.
In habitat, Disa welwitschii ssp. occultans flowers mainly in summer, around December to January, when wet grasslands and dambo systems are actively growing. It is best suited to attentive growers who can provide bright light, clean moisture during the growing season, excellent air movement and a suitable free-draining yet moisture-retentive medium. South African growers, international collectors, orchid hobbyists and rare plant enthusiasts will find this a rewarding choice for specialist collections focused on African terrestrial orchids.
