Aristolochia is a large plant genus with over 500 species that is the namesake of the family Aristolochiaceae. Its members are commonly known as birthwort, pipevine or Dutchman’s pipe and are widespread and occur in the most diverse climates. Aristolochia is a genus of evergreen and deciduous woody vines and herbaceous perennials.
Aristolochia ringens, commonly known as Gaping Dutchman’s Pipe, is an evergreen, perennial, climbing vine native to Central and South America from Panama through Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela. Flowers are large (18 – 25 cm long), yellow-green in colour with a netlike pattern of dark purple markings and resemble the pitchers of various carnivorous plants in the genus Nepenthes. They require a full sun to semi shade position. The roots of this plant are used medicinally to treat snake bites. This species attracts butterflies to the garden though they are not the pollinators.
