Nandina is a monotypic genus of flowering plant in the family Berberidaceae, native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.
Nandina domestica, the only species in the genus Nandina, is commonly known as Sacred Bamboo or Heavenly Bamboo. Unlike the common name suggests, it is not a bamboo but a small, erect, evergreen shrub, deciduous in colder climates, up to 2 m tall by 1.5 m wide, with numerous, stems growing from ground level. It is widely grown in gardens for its ornamental value with attractive bright-red autumn foliage in the cool months, and attractive fresh new foliage growth in spring. It can be used in landscaping as a hedge or screen and as a statement plant. It grows well in pots and is an ideal subject for use as a bonsai. The pinkish white flowers are borne in early summer in conical clusters held well above the foliage followed by bright red inedible berries ripening in late autumn and often persisting through the winter.
