Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.

Kniphofia angustifolia, also known by its synonyms Kniphofia natalensis var. angustifolia or Kniphofia rufa, and commonly referred to as the Grass-leaved Poker, is a South African endemic species found in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. This species produces loose clusters of pendulous flowers that range in colour from cream to dull yellow, or even orange-red, blooming from summer to early autumn, with peak flowering occurring between January and March. The size and shape of the flowers and leaves can vary depending on the growing conditions, with flower colours ranging from nearly white to coral-red. It typically grows near mountain streams, on grassy slopes, and in marshy areas within mountain grasslands, particularly along the eastern slopes of the Drakensberg from Polela to the Estcourt Districts, at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 meters. Known for its striking appearance, it makes an excellent cut flower for vases and is also an attractive addition to garden borders.
