Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.

Kniphofia breviflora, also known by its synonyms Kniphofia breviflora var. concinna, Kniphofia concinna, or Kniphofia schlechteri, and commonly referred to as Short Poker, is a South African endemic species found in the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. This plant blooms from late summer to autumn, producing upright racemes of bright yellow flowers that make excellent cut flowers, lasting 2-3 weeks in a vase. In the garden, its flowers attract bees, birds, and butterflies. Kniphofia breviflora typically grows as a solitary plant with flowers ranging from white to yellow. It thrives in damp spots with full sun and looks its best when interplanted with grasses. The plant has 6-8 leaves per peduncle and several spreading, fleshy, cylindrical roots. The linear leaves can reach 40-70 cm in length. The peduncle, which extends above the recurved leaves, is 40-80 cm long, with a few sterile bracts beneath the inflorescence. The inflorescence is 5-8 cm long and 2-2.4 cm in diameter, with buds that are yellow-green, often tinged with red, and flowers that are whitish to yellow.
