Kniphofia (Red hot poker, Torch lily, Poker plant) is a genus of plants in the family Asphodelaceae that includes 70 or more species native to Africa. Some species have been commercially used for horticultural use and are commonly known for their bright, rocket-shaped flowers. These plants produce spikes of brightly-coloured, hanging, red-to-orange flowers. This gives names such as “torch” and “red hot poker” to many of them.
Kniphofia pumila, synonymously known as Kniphofia carinata or Kniphofia abyssinica and commonly known as Dwarf Poker is a unique, broadleaf evergreen perennial that grows from bulbs, corms, or tubers. This stunning plant features vibrant green foliage, and in spring, it bursts into a beautiful display of chartreuse, green, orange, and yellow flowers, attracting hummingbirds. It thrives in full sun with regular moisture, but once established, it becomes drought-tolerant and prefers dry conditions in summer. Kniphofia pumila flourishes in rich, well-drained soil and is perfect for creating a striking garden feature. Native to regions from Eritrea to northeastern DR Congo, this red hot poker species is a standout performer, especially in subtropical climates.
