The genus Searsia was named after Paul B. Sears (1891-1990) who was head of the Yale School of Botany. The Anacardiaceae family is widespread in warmer parts of the world with about 111 species of Searsia occurring in southern Africa. Most of the species grown in southern Africa, belonging to the genus Rhus, have been placed in Searsia.

Searsia undulata commonly known as Kuni-Bush in English and Koeniebos in Afrikaans is a South African indigenous species from the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces. It grows into a shrub with dark green largish leaves. It has attractive reddish fruit and is quite drought resistant. It is well suited to coastal gardens. It is a fast growing, tough tree that is suitable for screening or hedges. Plant it in full sun in well-drained soil. It responds well to applications of organic fertiliser.
