Ipomoea is the largest genus in the family Convolvulaceae, with over 500 species. Most of these are called morning glories, but this can also refer to related genera. The genus occurs throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The genus is made up of annuals, perennials, evergreen shrubs, and trees. Many of the annuals and perennials are trailing or twining climbers. Although mainly grown for their funnel-shaped or tubular flowers, some are grown for their foliage. Ipomoea can be grown in the greenhouse or outdoors as annuals over a pergola or archway, or as groundcover.
To really enjoy this beautiful “morning glory”, it is best to come out at night! Throughout the summer, fragrant pure white tubular flowers up to 15cm long will quickly open at night, releasing a powerfully sweet perfume into the evening air. The ideal location for this wonderful vine is near your patio where you can enjoy the fragrant scent at evening. Technically a tender tropical perennial, most people grow these as annuals. Moonflower is a close relative of morning glory and has similar heart shaped leaves. It is an easy and fast growing vine, thriving in even poor soil, it is well suited for growing on a trellis or as a ground cover.
