Lapeirousia is a genus with about 40 species in the Iridaceae family that is found across sub-Saharan Africa from Nigeria and Ethiopia to the southwestern Cape. Leaves are flat and curved to narrow and pleated.
Lapeirousia jacquinii, also referred to as Gladiolus anceps, and commonly known as Kabong, Paletblaar, or Rukkeperdjie in Afrikaans, is a South African endemic species native to the Western Cape and Northern Cape provinces. This small plant thrives on sandstone soils, ranging from Namaqualand in the north to Worcester in the south. Its leaves are grey-green, ribbed in texture, and its flowers feature long tubes on short spikes emerging from a branched stem. The stem is supported by several leaf-like, two-keeled bracts. The flowers are dark purple to violet, with the lower tepals closely held together and marked with white and red stripes. The upper tepal is larger and erect.
