Acokanthera is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae. It comprises 5 species and is generally restricted to Africa, although Acokanthera schimperi also occurs in Yemen. Its sap contains the deadly cardiotoxic glycoside ouabain. Acokanthera rotundata, commonly known as round-leaved poison-bush, grows as a shrub or small tree, with fragrant flowers featuring a white corolla, often pink to red on the corolla tube. The fruit is red to purple when ripe. Acokanthera rotundata is native to Zimbabwe, Eswatini and South Africa. The milky sap of this plant was widely used as arrow poison by the traditional bushmen (Khoisan) to form part of the cocktail used to poison the tips of their notoriously toxic arrows in hunting. All parts of the plant are highly poisonous with the possible exception of the ripe fruits. This South African indigenous plant is found in rocky areas of dry woodland.
