Schotia is a genus of 4 or 5 species in the legume family, Fabaceae. It belongs to the sub family Caesalpinioideae. They are evergreen or deciduous shrubs and small trees from the hot, dry areas of central and southern Africa. They are grown for their showy clusters of flowers which are followed by protein-rich, oblong leathery pods. They need a warm, frost-free climate and shelter from wind and grow best in full sun and light to medium well-drained soil. Propagate from seeds or cuttings in spring.
Schotia capitata, commonly known as the Dwarf Boer-Bean, Forest Tree-fuschia, Transvaal Boer-bean, Tree Fuschia or Wild Fuschia in English and Klein-boerboon, Transvaalboerboom or Transvaal-boerboon in Afrikaans, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to Southern Africa. It is prized for its vibrant scarlet flowers and attractive foliage, making it an excellent addition to gardens, bonsai collections, or as a container plant.
This species typically grows up to 7 meters tall, with a dense, wide-spreading canopy. It often adopts a climbing or scrambling growth habit, forming a large, spreading bush. The leaves are smooth, green, pinnate-compound with sub-opposite, sessile, obovate leaflets arranged in 3 to 5 pairs. The brilliant red flowers are nectar-rich and borne in dense, multi-branched inflorescences from early spring to mid-summer. The seeds are sub-rotund, pale brown, about 12 mm in length, and are encased in flattened, woody pods with a compressed yellow basal aril.
Schotia capitata thrives in full sun to semi-shade and prefers well-draining loamy soil. It requires generous watering during the growing season, ensuring that the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. This plant is best suited for USDA Hardiness Zone 10 and should be protected from frost. Schotia capitata is not known to be toxic to pets or humans. While it is a relatively low-maintenance plant, it requires some attention to thrive. Regularly check for pests and diseases and provide adequate support if the plant grows tall. Mulching can help retain soil moisture during the dry season.
Enhance your garden or collection with Schotia capitata seeds and enjoy the beauty of its striking flowers and foliage.
