The genus Stoebe is a fascinating and diverse group of plants belonging to the daisy family (Asteraceae), largely endemic to southern Africa. Often overlooked at first glance, these plants possess a subtle, understated beauty, with fine, feathery foliage and small, tufted flower heads that range in shades from dusty pinks to muted purples and whites. Adapted to some of the most rugged and windswept habitats, including rocky slopes, mountain ridges, and fynbos heathlands—Stoebe species are hardy survivors, playing an important role in stabilizing soils and supporting native pollinators. Their often woolly or silver-toned textures add delicate charm to wild and cultivated landscapes alike. Though not as widely known as other South African flora, Stoebe offers a quiet resilience and unique aesthetic that rewards those who take a closer look.
Stoebe rugulosa, commonly known as Purple Snakebush, is an endangered South African endemic perennial shrub found in the Western Cape province from Caledon to Albertinia growing amongst fynbos, on alluvial terrace gravels, usually overlying clays, possibly also stony shales. During late summer through to autumn the bright purple flowers that attract butterflies to the garden appear.
